7 Things to Know About Endoscopy Cost in Singapore

If you have been advised to undergo an endoscopy, one of the first questions you may have is how much the procedure will cost. The amount you pay can vary considerably depending on the type of endoscopy, whether you use a public or private healthcare provider, and whether additional procedures are performed during the examination.

Understanding the different factors involved can help you prepare financially and avoid unexpected endoscopy charges.

    1. The Type of Endoscopy Affects the Price

Endoscopy refers to several procedures that allow doctors to examine parts of the digestive tract using a flexible camera. Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, commonly called gastroscopy, examines the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum. Colonoscopy examines the large intestine.

These procedures have different fees because they involve different areas of the digestive tract and may require different preparation, equipment and medical services.

For example, Singapore’s Ministry of Health (MOH) reported a typical subsidised public-hospital day-surgery bill of about S$400 for an upper GI endoscopy with or without biopsy, based on 2023 transacted bills. For screening colonoscopy, the corresponding typical subsidised day-surgery bill was about S$710.

    2. Public and Private Hospitals Can Have Different Charges

Where you have your procedure can make a substantial difference to the overall bill. Public hospitals may offer subsidised rates to eligible patients, while private hospitals generally have different fee structures.

For an upper GI endoscopy, MOH reported a typical private-hospital day-surgery bill of approximately S$3,079, compared with S$400 for subsidised public-hospital day surgery in the 2023 data. These figures are examples rather than guaranteed prices, and individual bills can vary.

When considering Singapore’s endoscopy cost, it is therefore important to ask whether the quoted price applies to a subsidised or unsubsidised setting.

    3. The Procedure May Cost More if Additional Treatment Is Needed

An endoscopy is not always limited to simply viewing the digestive tract. During the procedure, doctors may take tissue samples for biopsy or remove certain polyps or other abnormalities when medically appropriate.

These additional procedures can increase the overall bill because they involve extra professional services, equipment and pathology or treatment-related charges.

MOH’s fee benchmarks also show that more complex endoscopic procedures can have substantially higher professional fees than routine examinations.

    4. The Quoted Price May Not Include Every Expense

When comparing endoscopy cost in Singapore, do not assume that a single advertised figure represents the entire bill.

Depending on the provider and procedure, the final amount may include consultation, doctor’s fees, hospital or facility charges, medication, consumables, anaesthesia and laboratory or pathology services. MOH notes that its fee benchmarks do not necessarily include all medications, investigations or special procedures.

Before booking, ask the clinic or hospital for a breakdown of what is included in the quoted package and what could result in additional charges.

    5. Anaesthesia Can Affect the Total Bill

Some patients may receive sedation or anaesthesia during an endoscopic procedure. The exact approach depends on the procedure, the healthcare provider and the patient’s circumstances.

Anaesthetist fees can therefore form part of the overall cost when anaesthesia is used. For example, MOH’s recommended fee range for an anaesthetist for routine upper GI endoscopy is listed separately from the surgeon’s fee.

It is worth checking whether sedation or anaesthesia is included in your quoted package rather than assuming it is automatically covered.

    6. MediSave May Help With Eligible Procedures

For eligible Singapore residents, MediSave can help offset certain medical expenses. MOH states that MediSave may be used for approved day surgeries, subject to applicable withdrawal limits.

MediSave can also be used for screening colonoscopies when recommended under the relevant screening guidelines, subject to the prevailing withdrawal limits.

However, eligibility and the amount that can be withdrawn depend on the procedure and applicable rules. Your healthcare provider can advise you about the expected MediSave claim and any remaining amount you may need to pay.

    7. Insurance Coverage and Out-of-Pocket Costs Matter

The amount you ultimately pay may differ from the original bill because of insurance coverage, MediSave and applicable subsidies.

MOH’s published hospital bill figures are generally presented before insurance and MediSave payouts, while public-hospital figures for eligible patients account for applicable government subsidies.

For this reason, the actual endoscopy cost in Singapore for one patient may differ significantly from another person’s bill.

Before undergoing the procedure, check with your insurer and healthcare provider about coverage, deductibles, co-payments and any pre-authorisation requirements. Asking for a detailed estimate can also make it easier to plan for potential out-of-pocket expenses.

    Conclusion

Understanding endoscopy cost in Singapore involves looking beyond the advertised procedure fee. The type of endoscopy, healthcare setting, sedation, biopsies or treatment, and additional hospital charges can all influence the final amount.

If your doctor has recommended an endoscopy, ask for a detailed quotation and clarify which services are included. You can then check your eligibility for subsidies, MediSave and insurance coverage before proceeding. This can give you a clearer picture of your expected expenses while ensuring that financial considerations do not come as an unexpected surprise.
